Muwei Wang is a New York based, China born, artist. Muwei Wang currently work as a part-time freelance illustrator specializing in traditional drawing and painting while also studied in SVA as a college student.
Muwei’s understanding of nature has been profoundly influenced by Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, especially the line, “We have forgotten that we ourselves are a part of nature, and the destruction of nature will ultimately rebound on us.” Carson’s thoughts deeply resonate in his artistic expressions, often showcasing the delicate balance between human actions and the natural world. His works weave themes of ecological fragility with hope for restoration, creating a dialogue between vulnerability and resilience.
Born in Chengdu, China, a city rich in history and culture, Muwei developed a fascination with traditional architecture from an early age. He enjoys sketching these ancient structures during his walks, using charcoal to capture their unique lines and textures. He discovered that the natural versatility of charcoal—its ability to convey both boldness and subtlety—perfectly aligns with the essence of these architectural forms. This approach has become a hallmark of his style, allowing him to vividly portray the serenity and strength of historical buildings while seamlessly blending traditional and contemporary perspectives.
